Response to an article on how violent video games are bad

The Article in question is written about a list developed by Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, warning parents as to which video games are the most violent.

"It's no wonder we're seeing the crimes we're seeing lately," Worthy says, referring to violent video games... Because, really, the primary reason that people go out and rape and steal and kill is because of video games. It has nothing to do with bad parenting, the breakdown of the family unit, the rampant sense of entitlement that permeates our society, drugs (and I'm including the legally prescribed ones here too), the idea that children can't be blamed or punished for their actions, or a government that is not doing enough to really help the economically disadvantaged (handouts with no incentives breed lazy beggars). I know that when I was a kid, if I had ever seen a goomba or overgrown turtle on the streets, I would have certainly been inclined to either stomp on it or shoot fireballs at it.

Now, even if you discount everything mentioned above, why are video games specifically the whipping boy? Let's go over the list of the games here- I want to show you something comical (or is it ironic?)

1. Grand Theft Auto
2. Manhunt
3. Scarface- This one is based off of a violent MOVIE
4. 50 Cent Bulletproof- This one is based off a RAPPER with violent lyrics
5. 300 The Videogame- This one is based off of a violent MOVIE
6. The Godfather- Again, based off of a violent (for its time) MOVIE
7. Killer-7
8. Resident Evil 4- There have been a couple of MOVIES based on this
9. God of War
10. Hitman Blood Money- There is a MOVIE based on this.

So, wait...of the 10 games on the list, 4 of them are based on violent content in other genres and 2 of them have had movies made out of them. It's funny, I don't see a list being released talking about the 10 most violent movies out there. You know, stuff like Saw, which from what I understand, due to the realism factor, is more disturbing than any of the listed games.

So, just in case my dripping irony has escaped anybody here, let me lay it all out on the line...I am of the opinion that violent video games should be VERY LOW ON THE LIST of concerns about what causes violence in society. Let's focus more of our energy on more effective things, like saving kids from abusive parents and re-evaluating Capitalism in the wake of giant corporate entities that throw money at the government and a middle class that is quickly sinking upon a foundation of quicksand.
