Alright, time for the long-awaited (at least by me) part 2 of my commentary on the movie industry- sex and nudity in the movies.
As you may recall, last post I talked about violence in the movie industry, calling attention to the extreme graphic violence that has reached popularity, and wondering why in the world people actually like to watch that stuff. Well, today I'll be talking about sex in film. So, jump in, close the door behind you, put on some soft music, and away we go...
What is sensuality and nudity in movies? Well, currently, it is most often a device used to get the Male 13-25 demographic to watch the movie, boosting ticket sales. Yeah, i know, it's supposed to be 18-25, but they're not kidding anyone. I figure teenage boys are much more likely to see a movie because it has a much-talked-about nude scene in it than 20-somethings. At least that was the case for me.
But therein lies the root of the problem. While violence in movies is common place, and we've become so desensitized to it that we barely bat an eyelash when someone is brutally killed, sensuality in movies is just plain naughty. You're much more likely to get a hard R or an NC-17 rating in a movie with nudity and sensuality than a movie with lots and lots of simulated violence.
So, let's get this straight here. The simulated unnatural act of killing your fellow man, sometimes in a very gruesome manner, is commonplace and gets you a PG-13 or R rating. But the exposure of human skin and the sensuality is verboten and nets you a hard R or NC-17 rating. Sure, you can get by with a few seconds of T-n-A in a PG13 movie, or a very short amount of sensuality, but that's about it. So, evidently, unnatural violent acts that break the very basis of almost all religions and almost all governmental laws is perfectly acceptable to portray in movies, but showing a person nude or portraying natural sensuality is just absolutely terrible and should be shielded from the eyes of our impressionable society.
So am I calling for an increase in sensuality and nudity in movies? No, not really. Sex and nudity for the sake of sex and nudity is just as base at the root as violence for the sake of violence. On the other hand, if nudity and sensuality would be natural at a particular point in the story, I don't think there is anything wrong with it. In fact, if things worked the way I think they should, then the movies with the most sensuality and nudity would actually be love stories, because it would be a natural progression of the story. It just seems that society as a whole and movie industry's reflection of society really has a mixed-up viewpoint about the nature of evil. The human body (can be) very beautiful, and two lovers expressing their love for each other is very natural. Committing violent acts is not.
I think the hippies got it right- make love, not war.
So, what are your thoughts?
